Reviewing current status on HCMC MRT lines infrastructure projects, with discussion on key success factors and issues to be resolved including creation of a Socio-Economic Development Strategy to maximize the economic benefits arising from HCMC MRT lines infrastructure projects, including sharing of best practices and drawing parallel on success stories from world’s leading-edge MRT systems across Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa, Europe and the region, in order to ensure successful delivery of Ho Chi Minh City MRT lines infrastructure projects, all this is geared towards a significant step in boosting urban development along the route and contribute in reducing traffic overloading plaguing Ho Chi Minh City, as well as serving passengers better with faster connections across the MRT network

Under the HCMC transport development plan by 2020 approved by the Prime Minister, the HCMC government has mapped out 6 MRT lines infrastructure’s master plan that will boost urban development along the route and contribute in reducing traffic overloading plaguing HCMC as well as serving passengers better with faster connections across the MRT network. Of these, MRT Line 1 is expected to be fully in operational by the end of 2020, however, there is possibility for the early partial opening for elevated section at the end of 2018 or in 2019. The opening of MRT Line 2 shall be by the end of 2020. MRT Line 5 is scheduled for completion in 2025, will be driverless, with automated ticketing systems and smart cards. MRT Line 5 (first phase) is being carried out over a period of eight years, from 2015 to 2023. The first phase of MRT Line 5, with nine stations, will have a total length of 8.9 km, including 7.46 km underground and 1.43 km above ground. In the first phase, MRT Line 5 will connect with MRT Line 1 at the Sai Gon Bridge and MRT Line 2 at the Bay Hien intersection. MRT line 5 plays an important role in shaping the urban railway system in Ho Chi Minh City, along with MRT Line 1 and Line 2. It will mark a significant step in the development of urban living and help resolve the traffic jams plaguing Ho Chi Minh City. For the second phase of MRT Line 5, which extends from the new Can Giuoc Bus Station in District 8 to the Bay Hien intersection in Tan Binh District, connect with MRT Line 3b at the Hang Xanh intersection and MRT Line 4 at the Phu Nhuan intersection. MRT Line 3, Line 4 and Line 6 are still in the planning phase. Cost estimates for MRT Lines 1 to 6 are US$2.49 billion, US$2.07 billion, US$3.69 billion, US$4.45 billion, US$4.47 billion and US$1.25 billion respectively, a total of over US$18 billion up for grab for opportunities available for all forward-thinking companies involved in the business of MRT’s planning, development and construction.

In addition, the HCMC government has given the nod to an extension of MRT Line 1 to the neighboring provinces of Binh Duong and Dong Nai. On 22 November 2017, the HCMC Urban Railway Management Board announced that the HCMC MRT Line 1 to be extended, that will link to Ben Thanh Market with Suoi Tien Tourist Park in District 9 and will be extended to the neighbouring provinces of Binh Duong and Dong Nai. To facilitate this, an additional 2km of line will link Suoi Tien Station with a station at Bình Duong from where it will be extended further to other stations in the two provinces. The cost of extending HCMC MRT Line 1 is estimated at US$950 million. The construction of the 2km section will be done in 2018-2022 while the extension to the provinces will start in 2023.

For all industry players involved in the business of planning, constructing and maintaining MRT lines infrastructure and stations, this conference is an opportunity to participate in HCMC’s 6 MRT lines infrastructure as well as the planned extended MRT lines infrastructure projects worth more than US$18 billion.
